Orangeries

Blending House & GardenBlending House & Garden Offering space & LightOffering space & LightOrangeries came into prominence in the 17th and 18th century and were a popular addition to grand homes in the Georgian period. The name reflects the original use of the building as a place where citrus trees were wintered. The traditional design of an Orangery was characterised by symmetrical windows and a combination of brick or stone walls with a flat roof and a single or multiple roof lanterns.

As opposed to a conservatory, an orangery will typically have less glazing in the wall elements and a single or multiple glazed lanterns set into a flat roof, rather than a fully glazed roof.
